Science: Animal Adaptations with Focus on Birds
Our students will be exploring the importance of animal adaptations with a focus on birds, and creating biomimicry-based inventions of our own. We will also have an in-house field trip from the Audubon Society of Denver, where we will explore how owls are night ninjas. After a discussion that involves looking at artifacts and exploring a stuffed barn owl, we will dissect sterilized owl pellets to look at their diet and identify bones. Social Studies: Honoring Our Veterans Our students will pause from science during the week leading up to Veterans Day, to celebrate the veterans in our lives. We will learn about how they use math and science in their jobs, talk about service and sacrifice and thank military members for their service--thank you to all our families who have veterans or active duty members! We conducted several experiments on matter, and used social intelligence to work together and collaborate.
In first grade science, we consider the question, "What do scientists do?"
From there, we make connections through the units we study in earth systems science, physical science and life science :
Last year, we made oobleck, grew plants, built models of the moon's phases, studied the contributions of African-American inventors, investigated weather drones, hosted veterans and built 3-D cities. Prepare to be amazed by your first grader! |
