Class Policies
Kiss & Go Mornings
To foster independence in first graders, we will have a kiss and go policy on the blacktop in the morning. Parents will not be allowed in the classroom in the morning unless prior arrangements are made. There will be an exception made on the first day of school. Parents may come to the classroom for the first 15 minutes to take pictures. After that time is up, parents will be asked to leave and implement Kiss and Go Mornings for the remainder of the year.
Thursday Folders
An orange folder will come home every Thursday and will contain important information to ensure proper communication from both the school and classroom. Homework will also come home and be returned in this folder each week.
Birthday Celebrations
Our classrooms will celebrate student birthdays once a month, one day of the month, for 20 minutes from 3:20-3:40. We have found this makes celebrating birthdays equitable for all students and limits disruption to instruction. Check with your homeroom teacher about coordinating with other families who share the same month.

Drop-Off/Pick-Up
Students should NOT arrive before 8:40am (unless eating breakfast), as no adult supervision is provided on the grounds. Children are NOT permitted in the building before the beginning of school, as teachers are busy preparing for the day and attending meetings. If your child is not eating breakfast, students are required to report directly to the playground, where they are supervised by staff from 8:45am until 9:00am. At 8:55am, first grade students will be asked to line up by the ECE classrooms. Students will also be picked up at this same location at 3:45. Any students not picked up by 4:00 will go to the office.
Inclement Weather
If it is raining or snowing in the morning, a sign will be posted on the front door with directions to drop off students in the librar. We will pick them up there at 8:55 when the bell rings. Please do not wait outside of our classroom doors.
If it is raining or snowing at dismissal time please pick up students in the classroom, Room 115 for Marshall and Room 113 for Walker. Second Recess

Classroom Management
We are firm believers in positive reinforcement and logical consequences. Logical consequences help children learn from their mistakes and know what to do next time, not make them feel shameful. Logical consequences fall into three categories:
Making Reparation An opportunity to face and repair their mistakes. Example, tears another student’s drawing = student helps tape it back together. Mishandling Responsibility More limits are set temporarily. Example, leaves work station materials a mess = station is closed for a day. Removal from Activity Used when a student is not able to cooperate and is being disruptive to the group. Separated until the student has reflected and is ready to participate in a positive way. Water BottlesEach student should have a labeled water bottle that is kept in the classroom throughout the week. Water bottles will be sent home every Friday to be cleaned and should return to school on Monday.
If your child needs a water bottle in their lunch, please, pack a separate water bottle in their lunch. This way, they will not need to come back to the classroom for their water bottle before lunch. |
