Welcome to 1st grade math! We are using the Bridges math curriculum, developed by the Math Learning Center. The Math Learning Center curriculum focuses on developing in students a deep understanding of math concepts, proficiency with key skills, and the ability to solve new and complex problems. Learning activities tap into the intelligence and strengths all students have by presenting mathematically powerful material alive with language, pictures, and movement.
Students in a Bridges classroom talk about math, describe observations, explain methods, and ask questions. They are encouraged to find multiple ways to solve problems and show different ways of thinking. This is a vital way to help students build more flexible and efficient ways to solve increasingly complex problems. Hands-on activities engage them in exploring, developing, testing, discussing, and applying mathematical concepts.
By giving them a solid foundation that provides the flexibility to problem-solve in different contexts, students can feel successful not only as mathematicians, but also in other areas of their lives.
We will begin assessments in the form of one-on-one interviews and with
i-Ready computerized diagnostic assessments.
Mathematicians will also explore our workplaces (rotating math stations) during Math workshop. These stations include manipulatives, iPads (ToDo math app), and math books.
In Unit 1, we will be working on developing number sense. Activities include:

In Unit 1, we will be working on developing number sense. Activities include:
- Quickly recognizing number of items in a collection (up to 10)
- Counting by 1s, 2s, 5s & 10s
- Making and reading simple graphs
